Music videos were just becoming a facet of pop culture in 1980, The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star” having come out only one year prior. At the time, most videos featured artists performing their songs in a traditional stage setting, but Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes” introduced some creative effects into the mix, pushing the limits as he was wont to do. The video ended up costing $425,000 to produce, making it one of the priciest music videos in history.
