Law & Order: SVU Was Inspired by a Real-Life Murder in 1986

Dick Wolf says he drew inspiration for SVU from the infamous 1986 “Preppy Murder” case. Chambers Jr. strangled a woman, but he claimed they were just having consensual “rough sex.” The tragic and violent act led Wolf to write an episode of Law & Order with similar themes, and eventually, create SVU, a show Wolf says was intended to take on “issues against women, against children and adults.”
