Mariska Hargitay is a Trained Rape Crisis Counselor

When Hargitay first signed on to play Olivia Benson, she had no idea how deeply the role would affect her. After becoming deeply moved by letters from sexual assault victims, Hargitay received training to become a rape crisis counselor. In 2004, she founded the Joyful Heart Foundation, an organization that seeks to help survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse through advocacy, education, and retreats.
