Lighting is Key

Keep in mind that lighting is the most important factor when trying to make a room less boring. You can get away with using a lot of whites and beiges if you get a lot of natural light in a room. If your room doesn't have  a lot of natural light, make sure that you use paint and furnishings that compliment the lighting that's available. Make sure that you add pops of color as well. Plants, paintings, and colored furnishings can do the trick.
