UK Supergroup featuring the likes of U2, Culture Club, and Duran Duran, Band Aid gave the world maybe the best – and worst – Christmas song of all time. All proceeds were meant to benefit the famine in Ethiopia. However – recent critics have slammed the song for overtly racist phrasing.
Celine Dion, My Heart Will Go On (1997)
Titanic’s enthamic ballad, recognizable to even the most out-of-touch with pop culture listener, sky rocketed Dion’s already impressive career. She sold 18 million copies of that baby. However – it almost never happened. Dion initially didn’t want to sing the song, and James Cameron didn’t think his historical drama would benefit from a pop song. Oh, how wrong they both were. In 1998, the song itself won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and an Emmy.
