While other films have tried to use the battle as a scene to propel further drama, Stalingrad tells the battle as it was, and uses it as the primary focus. Director Joseph Vilsmaier shows the battle from the German perspective, using a small battalion of soldiers as the main characters. He shows the specific atrocities they endured while humanizing the soldiers.
