Nichelle Nichols is an African-American woman who played the character of Uhura in Star Trek. She was so important to the show, it is said that even Martin Luther King asked her to stay when she wanted to leave. She was the communications officer of Star Trek. At the same time, she is considered to be the first Black character with power on TV shows.
