Dark Souls
Nowadays, every game with a perceivable level of difficulty is referred to as “the Dark Souls of this” or “the Dark Souls of that,” but the truth is, nothing is quite like Dark Souls at all (except for the other From Software games that use the same idea, obviously). Dark Souls was created to pay homage to actual historical combat, with a Lovecraftian twist. Combat is optional (in most cases) and the design of the game pales in comparison to the combat. Dark Souls 1 holds up, but Dark Souls 3 is equally as fantastic.
