Mike Tyson explained that the idea behind the face tattoo came from a period in his life where he truly hated himself. He wanted to destroy his own personal image, which initially manifested as Tyson wanting to get his entire face tattooed over. However, the artist refused to do that, so they settled on a simple, yet noticeable, tribal design.
