American Gothic, 1942
"American Gothic" is a painting by Grant Wood that was completed in 1930. The painting depicts a farmer and his daughter standing in front of their house in rural Iowa.
The models for the painting were actually Wood's sister, Nan, and his dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby. Wood was known for his use of rural and small-town imagery in his paintings, and "American Gothic" is one of his most famous works. Today, the painting is housed at the Art Institute of Chicago, where it remains one of the most popular works in the museum's collection.
