The Afghan Girl, 1984

Sharbat Gula was the inspiration behind the Aghan Girl. This picture is also referred to as “the First World’s Third World Mona Lisa”.

It was taken by photojournalist Steve McCurry in 1984 when Gula was just a child living in the refugee camps of Pakistan during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.
