Apollo 11 Launch

The launch of Apollo 11, the first manned mission to land on the Moon, took place on July 16, 1969.

The mission was the fifth manned flight of the Apollo program and the third to launch with a crew on board. The mission's main objective was to land on the Moon, which had never been done before, and return safely to Earth. A few lucky people in the Launch Control Center at Kennedy Space Center can be seen in the picture watching its launch.
