John “Drumbo” French (Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band)

Imagine having to deal with some guy who WAS NOT a musician at the time Drumbo was hired. Captain Beefheart let Drumbo help compose the chaotic avant-masterpiece (some people consider it that, it’s more about who took inspiration from the album though), as Beefheart had a very narrow view of music theory. Drumbo played his heart out on that album, developing some of the whackiest and hard to understand lines ever made.

The More You Know

  • Courtney Love was briefly the singer for Faith No More in the early 1980’s.
  • Layne Staley asked Jerry Cantrell to play in a funk band and agreed to sing in Cantrell’s band in exchange. The funk band didn’t last but Cantrell’s band became Alice in Chains.
