Reed was cast alongside Evan Rachel Wood in 2003’s Thirteen. She co-wrote the script along with director Catherine Hardwicke, who was her “surrogate mother.” The film deals with sensitive topics like addiction and sex, which was loosely based on Hardwicke’s own struggles. Reed won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance.
