In Van Nuys, detectives Peter Barba and Jim Nuttall reviewed Sherri’s file and found it strange enough that they reopened the case. Nuttall and Barba rejected the burglary theory since the suspect was proven to be female. They decided to pursue Sherri’s case as a murder, with the burglary having been staged by the perpetrator to throw police off the trail.
