Maryland Teens Grocery Shop for Elderly and Immunocompromised

Two sophomores from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland used their time off from school to help the elderly and immunocompromised in their community.

Matthew Casertano and Dhruv Pai decided to give back by delivering necessities to those most at-risk from COVID-19.

One person they helped out, 73-year-old Jimmy Kraft, was especially grateful for the good deed, as Kraft is retired and has been sheltered at home caring for his severely handicapped grandson. When he needed help getting food and other necessities, Kraft found Teens Helping Seniors. The teens showed up at his door with bags of groceries shortly after.

The project is simple: teen volunteers practice proper social distancing and take meticulous care in being extremely clean while shopping and delivering the goods. Bags of items are left at front doors and cash is left out for the volunteers.

The teens came up with the idea after they had shopped for the grandparents and neighbors, and now they have several volunteers joining their efforts to help even more people during this tough time.

"This was tremendously helpful," said Mr. Kraft. "It truly is so amazing that teenagers would spend their time helping one of the most vulnerable populations. I am very grateful for their help and hope that more kids will join them in their efforts."
