Originally, Pearl Jam’s record label refused to fund the music video for “Jeremy” because they didn’t believe the song would make it as a single. After a while, the label gave in, and the video stirred up tremendous controversy for its narrative: relying on biblical references and external character descriptions, a bullied boy becomes depressed and shoots himself in front of his classmates. The video won four VMAs in 1993 and helped Pearl Jam separate itself from other Seattle grunge bands.
