This Orchestra Performs Symphonies with Typewriter Sounds

While most orchestras have string sections, this particular orchestra out of Boston plays something a little different. For sixteen years, the Boston Typewriter Orchestra has been famous for playing, you guessed it, typewriters.

Some of the members have musical backgrounds but many are devoted to only their typewriters. The mechanical clicks, kerchunks, and dings of the typewriters combine to make some oddly beautiful music.

Since COVID-19 has put a pause on concerts and shows, the BTO hasn't played for a live audience in quite some time. Like many other musicians, however, the orchestra reunited recently via video call to perform a new song together.

They recorded their new song, "Unprisoning Your Think R.H.I.N.O.," and it's now available on YouTube.
