Originally, John Wayne played football for the University of Southern California on scholarship starting in 1925. After a dramatic injury, he was forced to give up the sport and the scholarship along with it. He got work as a prop boy and background character in movies, where he met director John Ford. This led to some big movies in his career, like iconic film Stagecoach.
