Early Life

Sally Hemings was the youngest of five siblings, and was also 25 years younger than Martha. Hemings and her siblings grew up at the Jefferson’s plantation and were trained as ‘artisans and domestic servants,’ meaning they were usually not out in the field with the other slaves. They were considered to have positions at the top of the slave hierarchy.
