Eventually, she was adopted by her stepfather, Keith Davis, who was a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder at the time. Her mother, Dorothy, met him when she was working as a university data analyst in 1968. She and her three step-siblings later moved with the family to South Carolina for her stepfather's work.
