Denmark’s New LEGO House

In Billund, Denmark, kids can visit the recently opened LEGO House, where they can marvel at the LEGO themed architecture, build with classic LEGO bricks at the World Explorer section, or build special LEGO flowers to plant in a nearby LEGO meadow. Kids and adults can also choose from three LEGO eateries. In one restaurant, the Mini Chef, customers they will be served food by a dancing robot.

The special LEGO House was opened in September 28, after almost seven years of planning and four years of construction on the 130,000 square foot playhouse. The house was designed by Danish architecture firm BIG. The structure looks like a stack of 21 plastic LEGO bricks, with multicolored rooftops, terraces, and walls. Aside from playrooms, the LEGO House is also an educational place. The house hosts the LEGO history museums, as well as the Masterpiece Gallery. The Gallery features elaborate LEGO designs from designers and casual fans all over the world.

“With LEGO House, we celebrate creativity and the strength of learning through play,” said LEGO owner Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen. “When they play, children learn the basic skills that they need, such as creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities.” The LEGO house is expecting to host at least 250,000 visitors each year. Tourists can visit the playgrounds, shop at its LEGO store, or dine at each of the restaurants without paying any entrance fee. But access to the experiential zones costs $31 and must be booked in advance because of restrictions in space.
