There were a total of 45 passengers on board, and of those 45, 28 survived the initial crash.

In the Andes Mountains on October 13th, 1972, the people in this photograph went down in Flight 571. Sixteen people were rescued, having resorted to cannibalism after getting stranded atop a glacier for 72 days.
