Climate Activist Greta Thunberg Turns 18

Greta Thunberg, a Swedish teenage activist who has in many ways become the international face of the climate change movement, turned 18 this past Sunday—and she rang in the occasion with some very on-brand sarcasm.

"Tonight you will find me down at the local pub exposing all the dark secrets behind the climate- and school strike conspiracy and my evil handlers who can no longer control me! I am free at last!!" she tweeted from her verified account. The young woman was sporting a shirt that read "Flat Mars Society."

The teenager has asked her elders to step up to the plate and address the climate crisis seriously. Thunberg's actions inspired a global youth movement after she went viral for cutting class in 2018 as a response to the lack of environmental action by world leaders.

"We can't just continue living as if there was no tomorrow, because there is a tomorrow," she told Time in 2019. "That is all we are saying."

The activist has won a number of humanitarian prizes, the funds from most of which she donated to COVID relief funds in the Brazilian Amazon, as well as the United Nations Children's Fund.
