One of Laguna Beach's most prominent plotlines was the love triangle between Kirstin Cavallari, Stephen Colletti, and Lauren Conrad. Years later, Cavallari later said that the triangle was real, but that the show made a concerted effort to exacerbate the issue. "I think [MTV] sort of kept it going by having my boyfriend at the time going and hanging out with Lauren, which was hard!" she said. However, Cavallari admitted that the editing was "very heavily involved" and much of the animosity was staged.
