Ulysses S. Grant
The 18th president of the USA was a partner in a financial firm with a guy named Ferdinand Ward. In 1884 however, Grand found out that Ward had embezzled all of their money. Penniless, he was unable to cover his medical costs accrued from his advanced throat cancer. Grant passed away while he awaited a series of essays that he asked Mark Twain to write so he could make enough money to keep going.
