In April of 2019, Janelle Monae came out as pansexual in a Rolling Stones interview. Her sexuality had been speculated in the media for years, especially after her longstanding friendship with Tessa Thompson. She had kept quiet on the subject but finally said: "I'm open to learning more about who I am [...] Being a queer black woman in America [...] someone who has been in relationships with both men and women..."
