He was once at an LGBTQ youth shelter where a young girl thanked him for being a straight ally. When he said he was gay, she asked why he wouldn't be more public about that. "It hit me like a gut punch," he later said, "It felt like someone had knocked the wind out of me. I realized how important it is in this day and age to be visible; have people know who you are."
