The Mexican authorities lost contact with Lopez after several years of good behavior. The authorities figured that he had changed his life for the better since he had opened a KFC franchise in Mexico City, and was planning on purchasing one closer to the border where his family lived. The last recorded sighting of Umberto Lopez was when he crossed the border into America legally.
